Showlove turns Five

ALS so fresh

Honcho shoot behind the scenes

History Records Greatness

I added the second tattoo portrait on my left forearm... Michael Jordan.

Some love it, most don't understand... I know its significance and that's what's important.

MJ is every dude's icon in some way or form whether they admit it or not. We're talking about the ultimate winner, the world's first billionaire athlete, the creator of trash-talk... Michael Jordan.

Basketball is life to me and growing up, Michael Jordan was Jesus. I patterned his moves on the court, his cockiness and above all his winning mentality.

I am a product of the "MJ State of Mind". A way of being that requires a level of confidence that can only ever be perceived as arrogance. Defying odds, creating opportunities and always remaining cool in the situation.

As far as history goes... Jordan is the iconoclast, hence years after retiring... We still rock his pairs

History Records Greatness

I mentioned that I would be talking you through the next batch of tattoos that I'm donning on my forearm. A collage of great men that have inspired me in various ways through their stories, pain and courage.
Great men whose names are recorded in history and will live on forever...
The first legend I have donned, is Arthur Ashe. His autobiography is the first I've ever read and have read it a few times. "Days of Grace" is a tale of a man who beat the odds within his own community, especially since tennis wasn't considered a black sport. He pushed himself to the limits and became the first black an to win Wimbledon.
Off the court he was politically active and used his celebrity to speak of social woes.
The man had taste, partied, played sports at the highest level and eventually died a tragic death.
Meet Arthur Ashe.

History Records Greatness

I'm definitely in a new phase in my life. A lot has changed on a personal level and I've learned the hard lesson that not all is for the public and only the strong survive.

I believe I'm a better man for the lessons, one has to be good to self and good to others. Until you've lived and experienced, you lack knowledge and therefore lack power. Best believe I'm a powerful man.

My new phase has come with new ink. My fourth tattoo reads, "history records greatness". It's up there with my favourite quotes, it's what I want on my tombstone... It's what motivates me. The 'greats' are all recorded in history, they are embedded in our minds and hearts... Their time has been well spent.

The text on my arm is the beginning of my sleeve. My forearm is officially the canvas for the men that I admire... Most are no longer living. I have read their books, watched documentaries, studied their craft... I am a product of their strife, their mistakes are my tutorials.

Many would be surprised by the men I admire... No Jay-Z will not be tattooed on any part of my frame. I'll be showing you pics of the process and then give some background on that particular individual and their relevance in my life.

These men are winners in various ways. Champions of their craft. Pioneers and brave hearts... They inspire me... They teach me. They have been recorded in time... Their names will live forever.

I chose my left arm because it's my weaker arm. I will now have strength in numbers on my path to greatness.

The making of the legend

Novak Djokovic is a dude that I've tried to ignore... Impossible. Tennis definitely isn't my game, I played it in primary school, Stefan Edberg was my dude but I soon became an observer when other sports took over.

I'm still a great fan... It's an amazing spectator sport... Titans always clashing. Over the last few years Roger Federer has been my dude... Such class, such composure but ironically his lack of emotion could possibly be the reason why Rafael Nadal has been schooling him.

This seems to me an era of true grit for men's tennis. Fedex needs to go to 'lack of anger' management sessions, he needs to find to locate is aggression and then channel it on the court... He's still my dude.

Truth be told,we love our sports stars for how they carry themselves off the court too. Fedex has always been suave and Nadal has caught up.

Having said that, it will always boil down to the battle on the court and not the battle of their tailors. Djokovic is hands down the very best right now. I'm writing this after watching his interview on CNN and dude is all focus. He has stated that he will win the French Open and complete his career slam.

Such confidence is important. One has to believe in themselves and one also has to instill fear in opponents. Djokovic is technically not as gifted as Nadal and Federer but his improvement over the last 24 months showcases a dude who won't accept that. His heart is the biggest in the game currently and he will continue to improve technically... This is a scary thought.

This is the making of a legend.

Als with fresh

It's the season when nightlife is at its peak.

ALS has been relentless and will continue to be.

This week we vibe with the legend that is Dj Fresh... I can't wait.

As of next week we'll be opening an hour earlier at 6pm

All love

Don’t sleep on Cole

Rap fans have become so impatient and blatantly demanding... I speak from expedience.

'Fans' also feel as though they can now tell you what your content should be and how you run the business of your product. Everyone is an expert but very few are investors and understand the bottom-line.

Am I also getting impatient where J.Cole is concerned? Yes I am but I also understand that when it comes to popular culture, timing is everything... You only get one chance.

Cole is like a young Nas so his buzz is different to that of a Drake who is like a young Jay-Z. I believe that it's tougher for Cole because he isnt pushing the swagger angle... He's a lyricist and that isn't easy in the current climate... People want club bangers only.

I believe Cole World will not disappoint... Dude is up there with my current favourite emcees... Let's be patient and let's be fair.

I believe he will go down as one of the greatest eventually.

Trust me

Wear these loafers out

It took me years to get into shoes. If it wasn't a pair of sneakers or flip-flops, it made no sense to me. My father always told me that grown men wear shoes... I believe they rock both.

A lot of the rap fraternity catch me in the street, rocking shoes and are shocked. The question is always whether or not I'm from a meeting... Firstly the answer is probably yes but I love looking dapper for me.

The tough thing with being business-casual, is finding shoes that make sense with a suit or denim. You know I love the preppy steez so penny loafers are perfect.

With or without socks(you better baby powder those joints), they speak for themselves. They truly showcase style.

Get a good pair and take care of them.

Trust me

Palladium

Yesterday I tweeted and asked who is the best dressed dude in the urban music space... There were some interesting answers but I give it to Skateboy-P Pharell Williams.

If you know about dude's come up, besides Bape and Billionaire Boys Club... You know that he put a lot of cats on. He is a behind the scenes style coach to a lot of dudes... He schooled Jay-Z and a lot of rappers on Evisu and how to work colour into their looks... Dude is actually a guru.

Here he is modeling a new label, Palladium. The stuff is so fresh, quite relaxed and leaves room for the creative.

I haven't seen any of it out here.

Holla at me if you find it.

Stay Fresh Sunday

My Head Honcho camp is turning it up next Sunday in Cape Town

Be sure to get your tickets early

The line-up is too fresh and we have that number one Soweto boy, Pro will be ripping the stage...

Wow

We five years deep baby

I've been throwing gigs for a long time. If the parents were away, the Motsoane cave was party central.

I always knew where the party was... Don't ask me how.

I've told the story of Showlove so many times... We are a work in progress but we can take pride in still being here.

We have thrown over 150 events around the country in over 60 venues, for various brands and markets.

We have been able to diversify our business... From award ceremonies, premiers and now the music business with Showlove Music.

We will continue to diversify, but we will always throw the meanest of parties.

Get those outfits together... Saturday we celebrate.

Why Speedy got booed

Fans are not stupid and they refuse to be disrespected. People spend good money to come witness their favourite entertainers do what we all assume they love and are very good at.

We were at Medunsa this Saturday and everyone killed it... Except Speedy. I can guarantee that they will never book that peculiar dressing ninja again.

Yeah I'm snitching... This is work, craft and art to us and I was also offended along with the booing crowd.

The man spent fifteen minutes on stage jumping up and down and walking around while hyping up other people's joints. You would swear that Speedy is Dj Khaled

I remember hearing one of his joints for a few seconds and his verse from "lento"... Horrible.

Speedy eventually stormed off stage, I mean... What does he have to be upset about? He's basically well paid hype man.

We got more entertainment from watching Speedy's bodyguard trying to look intimidating while protecting the towel.

Don't disrespect paying customers.

Easy

So who's got next?

The rap game is doing well... Whether it's commercial or underground... People are bumping the music and corporates are buying in.

It's been a great year for the new school with L-Tido and AKA holding it down. My question though, is who's got next?

Who has the new buzz? Is there a new beef, a new lyricist, a new showman? I don't them... And I'm looking. Not to sign, but as a fan of the genre... Who is going to challenge the older cats and go after the belt?

Rap demands competition. It demands that you make a public statement that you are the very best and that you show your skill every time.

With album releases from HHP, Pro and other veterans all imminent, does the new crop firstly exist and if they do are they ready to go in with the veterans. The rap game isn't friendly... Kill or be killed.

What happened to the ciphers and the open mics? Where are the new breed of emcees?

I think the game is wide open again for female emcees... Show yourselves... Challenge these ninjas.

Let's keep the game alive...

Who's got next?

Get to Shesha now

New Honcho drop

Get it while it's hot

Wayne the beast

I've been listening to Lil Wayne for a long time. I was forced to by my friend Ruli on our way to basketball games. Cash Money used to get him fired up and if he was fired up then I knew I could remain calm on the court and go to work... I didn't have to worry about him.

Wayne didn't make any sense to me then but I've watched dude grow and become great.

Wayne is a student of rap and a student of pop culture... He has merged the two better than any other rapper and on a more consistent level.

People give the props to Baby... Fair enough. Baby is the whip... Weezy is the engine.

The first week sales of over 900k fueled controversy... Many saying that they bought 300k albums themselves. Firstly, I do not believe this, but let's say it's true... In a modern day music business climate, Weezy would have still gone gold in his first week. Give props where props are due.

The supposedly now sober Lil Wayne hasn't lost a step. His work rate speaks for itself... There is always Wayne product out. He has given us Drake and repackaged Nicki... He is a music business phenom.

There's a silly debate about how Watch the Throne is a better album and should have sold more than Carter4. I love both albums for different reasons, but Wayne sold more because he speaks to more people. Check how the kids dress... Listen to their slang, they mess with Wayne.

Respect the game.
