Social Currency

As a grown man who has been in very serious relationships, you know that it's hard work. Truth is, men and women ultimately want the same thing... your love and your respect.

It's a modern day so the role of a man and women has shifted. Men are not always the provider because ladies are goal orientated too and doing it for themselves... in fact, a lot of men have become 'kept men'. I guess it depends on how you view it but the goals of an average eighteen year old( I've asked) are far different to the goals I had and are even more different to those of our fathers.

Women are no longer looking to simply keep a house and mind the kids... of course this doesn't necessarily mean that they are focused either.

The battle for power in a relationship is a sad one... there is no victor. Our parents fought for different reason; because a man couldn't put food on the table or because a woman didn't clean the house as well as he would like.

These days, most of us on the Internet are middle-class to rich and we don't have such issues. We have some level of disposable income and we have maids/helpers to clean our houses.

So what's the problem... what's beef?

The problem in modern day relationships is the battle for social currency... popularity. You see unlike real money, food, a house, etc... social currency cannot be shared. You cannot split popularity evenly and it's a problem for some.

If you're still attempting to be the flyest dude or chick in the club, then social currency is the only fiscal that you are concerned with. Do you know what this means? It means you will fight with her while she dishes out 73 hugs to dudes who don't even bother to greet you because she has to let them know that she's in the building.

It means you will fight with him because he either offers other women drinks or they feel as though they have the room to ask... both of you lack in respect and you will both lose.

A woman doesn't want a dude whose car is always spotted at The Yard and a man doesn't want a chick whose been in more videos than Dj SPHEctacular... not gonna work.

Truth is, there's nothing wrong with being single. Nothing wrong with going on dates. Nothing wrong with courtship and absolutely nothing wrong with romance. If the only time you spend together is at a party, then you will fight at every party.

Our parents weren't allowed to meet each other's parents unless it was time to get on bended knee. This makes no sense in a modern era but the point is, they were conditioned to be serious... it wasn't casual... it was legit.

Whoever you're with, take the time to know them on a private level(not just sexual). When you step out together, be comfortable enough to give each other space because you understand each other first and then can adjust to the social dynamics.

Understand that social currency will leave you lonely and broke.

All love

  1. Strangely, it's only JHB and CT that thrive on this social currency...
