As a grown-assed man, I listen to a lot of different music. My work has hip-hop as its catalyst but my iTunes has range. I love soul music. I'm a big fan of the OG crooners. I think it has a lot to do with a sense of style and presence.
When Jay-Z says, "this is Sinatra/at the opera/" he's describing a sense of presence. The ability to have all the attention on you, everyone silent and focused on you. The crooners of old( Brat pack) had this ability.
Michael Buble is a modern day crooner... You can easily spot Sinatra's influence. My question is, do we have black crooners?
In an age where cats seem to be more focused on their little dance moves than actual singing... Where the crooners at? I respect the likes of Chris Brown, but he's no crooner. I think Usher got close but he's also drifted. D'Angelo was a topless crooner, I guess... If you've seen dude lately then please tell him to keep his shirt on.
I can give the crooner titles to Maxwell and Raphael Saadiq. Suave cats who can write, sing, dress well and control a crowd... They do not have to do the dougie.
The look of the crooner is bound to change though but the voice must always be the focus. I think Miguel and Frank Ocean are currently holding it down for the young cats... They will have long careers.
Hahahaha this made me laugh a bit. "Even the mob vibed with him"
